This time the graphic is right on the money, as this is right about where hurricane Frances is supposed to hit land. I'm a bit nervous about this one, as they have already cancelled school for Friday, and moved the hs football game to Thursday. I knew this would happen as soon as I got all my rooms painted!
The news has already broken in about 100 times to let us know that it is "still on the projected course" and "be sure you have one gallon of water per person for two weeks." Ummmm, my house is only 2100 sq. feet. Just exactly where am I supposed to store all this water? The big news was the line at the Home Depot this morning. Apparently people are buying out generators as fast as they get them in. A load came in this morning around 7am, and people were in line by 5 am. They were actually handing out those little number tickets like you get at the deli, and it was first come, first serve. I went and got gas today; dh will get his tomorrow and by Friday we should know if we need to put the shutters up. I tell ya, this Florida living isn't all sunsets and beaches....I'm ready to go back to the cornfields of Indiana. Give me a good ol' twister to a hurricane any day!
In other news....I shampooed the carpet in the girls room and the hall today. It looks lovely. It's amazing how dirty carpet gets, even when you vacuume once or twice a day! Let me ask something....do you request that shoes be taken off when your kids friends come to visit? It's a standing rule in my house, but lately Betsy has gotten some flack about it. I ALWAYS take my shoes off in someones house. It's just the way I was raised. Also, let me ask what the take home rule is where you live. As long as I can remember, the rule goes like this....if Betsy is invited to a friend's house, I take her AND pick her up. If she has a friend over, they are responsible for the ride. I've run things this way for 11 years. For some reason, the parents here don't seem to get it. I have somehow become the designated taxi driver. There is one girl who I don't mind taking places, or giving a ride to due to a situation at home....but it's the ones with parents that are perfectly capeable of driving, yet choose to leave it to others that blows my mind. I thought this was common courtesy? And if Betsy gets a ride from someone, I always thank them....am I wrong?
I made pork roast and saurkraut for dinner. It was good. I also had peas and homemade cranberry sauce....mmmmmm. Wee one and I love that. I use the leftovers in a pie, and mix it with cherry pie filling. I think I'll pick up a can tomorrow when I go buy my hurrincane milk and, lest I forget, hurricane hostess snacks.
Okay, I've got to do bills and ironing. Later....

I hope you all don't get hit. The eye of the storm is supposed to hit where me and Jill used to live. I'm with you...I was always scared when I lived in FL because of the hurricanes, and I basically stopped wanting to live by the water because of my experience there (and we never had it THAT bad). Now about the shoes...everyone takes their shoes off in my house (except for me). I don't do it for 2 reasons...1) I always step in some sort of water as soon as I take my shoes off and that just annoys me, and 2.) I figure since I do the cleaning, I get to keep my shoes on. I don't like taking my shoes off when I go to someone else's house either. I just feel weird about that. I want my shoes on. Call me wacky...
Yes, we all take our shoes off when we go to someone's house. And when kids come to my house, they automatically take their shoes off.Apparently those kids' parents don't mind dirty carpets. It must be Michigan/Indiana thing.hehehe.And since my kids are younger than Betsy,I talk to the parents when making plans, but I always assume I am going to pick my child up unless other plans are made.Whats up with those parents?Hopefully you won't have to put up the shutters.I'm praying for you guys down in Florida.KIM
I hope this hurricane skips over you. That is probably the only thing I don't envy. Florida is beautiful but that I could live without. I aways take my shoes off when I step in someones home, It is something my mother always drilled into us at home. I have would laminate and ceramic tiles except for my bedrooms so I don't mind that much. I think alot of people take advantage of us stay at home moms and treat us like taxi drivers and babysitters...at least that how it is by me. Don't forget to get fully stocked with snacks in case the hurricane hits:) Have Good Night~KIM
OH I pray for you all safty. yeah We were talking atthe dentist today WOuld not want to live in FLorida. I like KY. C;an you tell me where you got all or fishy stuff for your bathroom.??????? A friend has fish border and theme in hers and likes the stuff you have in yours.I sent her to your web site and she loves your bathroom.
Well I don't think you are getting out of this one, unless that storms goes into reverse. Batten down the hatches, itsa comin! Well my only rug in the house is in the livingroom. There is access from the front door to every other room in the house via the attached hallway. So in the winter if people dont want to take off their shoes I direct them through the hallway. In the summer I don't make much of a fuss unless its raining out. But Sara makes a point in the winter to say to her friends take off your shoes if you are going into the livingroom. My thoughts are the same as yours when it comes to riding kids around.
WOW, it seems you all are definately not gonna get out of this one as easily. I am hoping that you do though! And, your "only 2100 square foot house" is PLENTY big woman! I live in a 1500 square foot ranch, so 2100 would be heaven! And, no I don't make people take their shoes off to come into my home. I always hated having to do it at other people's houses also and would purposely leave them on out of rebellion. I am bad I know! I also have hardwood floors, so they are much easier to clean than carpets! I do agree with you about the "taxi" and the parents of the child that is coming to your home SHOULD be brought and picked up by that parent, NOT by you! That is just plain ole' wrong!
Hugs and love, Lisa
P.S.: I will be thinking about you and watching the Weather Channel!
Found your blog recently and hope the hurricane bypasses you! -- looks like you live in or near St. Augustine, our favorite yearly vacation spot.
Hmmm on the other -- I don't think I know anyone who takes their shoes off inside or asks other people to. I used to prefer socks inside, until I slipped on the stairs while carrying a 2yo, who ended up in the ER with stitches. So I pretty much keep my shoes on inside, unless it's warm enough for bare feet.
Good luck with the storm!
Buckle Down and Stay Safe! I'll keep your family in my prayers.

Blinking heck, Florida is not the paradise it seems! I pray that you all stay safe. I will be watching out for you all.
The rules, I try to get people to take their shoes off in my house, unsuccessfully though. So my carpets take a good bashing and a good carpet cleaner is essential.
The other rule about picking up and dropping off, I do the same as you. I get a tad annoyed when it is expected I will drop kids off here there and everywhere like a taxi service. Theres one of Nats friends I dont mind helping out because her mum is a single parent and disabled, but the rest of her friends have to get here and home again on their own steam. Hope that helps........Jules xxx

Hopefully Jacksonville puts you north enough to not get to much damage. Our relatives are freaking out and wanting to head north. Oh joy for me if they should come here. I've been through a tornado and hurricanes. I pick a hurricane over a tornado any day! Shoes off rule in effect at our house. As for me taking my shoes off at someone else's house? It's habit. Stay safe and get collecting that water. Fill the tubs, too!
They keep coming up with weather alerts here all day also. I hope and pray that you will remain safe. Isn't coastal living fun? lol don't answer that!
I need to shampoo my carpets before I start school, figured I would do that when Ben goes back to work.
My prayers will be that those shutters won't even need to go up!!!!
Have a BLESSED DAY!!!

Sherry, up untill a year ago...I was the only parent driving my daughter and her friends anywhere, anywhere and everywhere. I would pull up in front of the childrens homes and look at their parents suvs sitting in the driveway, and every light on in their houses and i would look with venom and then say, "Why couldn't they drive????" There was always an excuse. So my poor son...I say no to all rides. I think I drive every third time. Now his friends mom must look at my car and my house and wonder the same thing for he is her oldest and she drives them everywhere. Sucker! But she will learn her lesson just as I did. I hope that storm doesn't come near you. Get the water, just put it on your kitchen floor. You can always use water. Especially down there in the heat. Hows your aunt in NC with all the storms? Is she alright?
I hope everything is ok in you town with the hurricane. I live on the Jersey Shore, and thankfully we havent gotten any hurricanes in recent years..but florida is another story. Hang in there, and everything will be fine! Oh, and whens theres a blizzard up here in the winter(there always is) I always stock up on snacks and hot coca, i really like blizzards, i love snow, and love to stay inside and watch movies and have hot coca. Storms are exciting! But not devestating ones ;-)-Meghan from Friendship, Loyalty and Love
Good Luck with the hurricane...hope it misses you.
I'm not entirely sure what rules I live by....depends on who it is I guess. Friends usually take off shoes to go upstairs here. Although they seem to do it without being asked!
Sleepovers....I guess I'd make arrangements each time...like "I can drop you off if they return you" or whatever seemed convenient. (To me!!)
It's tricky isn't it. I'd definately say if I couldn't or wouldn't do things & let the other side come up with suggestions. My pet hate is kind of the opposite , people who take over your child. My youngest plays with one girl & will go to play at say 11am, phone around 6pm to say "I've been invited for tea", phone again around 9 to say"I've been invited overnight. Around 11 the next morning I'd phone to see where she was...no answer, around 3pm she might ring to say "They took me out for the day, I'll be home after tea" etc...I hate it...I would never go off with anyone's child without telling them. To find she might have been 20 miles away without me knowing makes me cross & I think unless exceptional circumstances these things should be arranged more in advance as I don't want my plans messed up by not knowing where my kids are or when they're coming home.
I just look forward to the day it won't be my problem!!
Oh No! Be very safe.......
Do people panic buy the hurricane bread and milk, like they do for the Indiana snow storms? Just come on home to the Hoosier state. I think I too would prefer the occasional tornado warning to what you guys have been through this year. Buckle up and hunker down. Good luck to all of you guys.
