Ahhh yes, the first casualties of the summer....wee one's shoulders have been sufficiently burnt to a crisp! She was fine today when she went outside to swim. I don't know when it happened, but I think it was over at her friend's house. Their pool uses chlorine....the strong stuff....and I think what wee one has is a mix of sunburn and allergic reaction. We use the Baquacil which isn't chlorine, but a kinder, gentler sanitizing system. In any case, I saw the glow of wee one's shoulders before she came through the door! Poor kid. She couldn't even eat her dinner between the itching and burning. So, brilliant mother that I am (*enter sarcasm here), I filled a tub with tepid water and oatmeal. Let me tell you, that stuff works wonders! Her splotches aren't nearly as swollen and don't itch quite as bad. Of course, I did slather her with hydrocortizone cream as well. She is enjoying some ice cream in front of the tv right now....she says she isn't going to swim for a week!
Dh and I went to the insurance office today and I have to say, I wasn't as shocked as I thought I would be. For our two cars and a 16 year old girl, it will be $2400 a year. Dh is going to check with one other company before we sign with them. It was going to be $2500 but since Betsy has good grades and completed the school driving program, we got a $100 credit. Go Betsy! If anyone out there has a teenage daughter and an insurance company that they love, feel free to let me know....we haven't signed anything yet. We also got a new policy for the house, which was $14 less than our old one....woohoo. Hey, $14 is $14, right?
I made ribs with apricot bbq sauce, baked potatoes, corn and homemade coconut pecan pie for dinner. The ribs were tough, the potatoes were okay, the corn was so-so (I don't like corn) but the pie....dear Lord the pie....heaven on a plate I'm telling you. I really should sell my pies. They are scrumpdillyicious. You know who always said that? Dennis the Menace on the sides of DQ treats. Remember that? When sundaes came in paper cups....ahhhh, memories. Anyway, everyone else liked the dinner. I don't know what is wrong with me. I love cooking it but don't like eating it. So, why then am I such a fat butt? Well, I suppose it's because I love cooking AND eating thesweet stuff. Betsy just came through and said the pie was "good". Now that is quite a compliment coming from her. She hates coconut and nuts....lol. She had her pie with ice cream....and she's a size 6 petite. No freaking fair.
Seriously though, I have got to lose some weight. I lay in bed at night, deciding which diet I want to do....how much I want to lose....and it all sounds great. Until I get up in the morning and sprinkle chocolate chips between rock hard frozen waffles. SUGAR....WHY DO YOU MOCK ME???? I did buy some diet Dr. Pepper, which I do believe is the best of the diet drinks. I'm not big on artificial sweeteners, but when you are hankering for a sweetness kick....you gotta have something!
Well, I suppose I should go spend some time with my wee burnt one. Let me leave you with the one word every child needs to know this summer....SUNSCREEN!!!!

Banana Boat all the way, Baby! Don't leave home without it! My mom used to take tea bags, wet them and lay them on my shoulders and it would do the same thing. I do think I also recall her doucing me with vinegar a time or two to kill the sting.
Have a nice weekend.

WOW she sure looks bad. also they say put some vitamine e in the bath and I use chamomeal tea. its very good for it. Put the bags right on it and drink it too after you take the tea bags out. about insurance we have state farm in Mt sterling. NOW we can get our insurance here in Winchester but they charge more. We can not understand why Mike smith is cheaper. I can send you his state farm web site. but Rachael had straight a's and the drivers ed class and afew others things they gave us a discount for. Her insurance started at over 700 and went down to 300 every six months. The trick is they told us to put the car in our name. Even though it her car and to this day Tracys car is in our name. But list them only as drivers. But everyone is shocked that Rachaels pays only $300 ever six months. We paid out $1400 for The van 92 and the blazer a 99 and Rachaels car a 92 if that gives you any idea. We have insurance with replacement costs on it on our home and 100 deductable on that for around $250 a year. I have had this company since 1980 the one agent in state far since then. I have had claims and they paid us fairly each time and they also have been and were very helpful in the girls accident. Yeah I know I gain no matter what I eat so I diet daily. I have found the new three hour diet very interesting. I think you would like it.
I don't think that looks like a sunburn on Wee One's shoulders at all, it's more of a rash probably from the chemicals like you said. I hope she is feeling better by tomorrow! I know the ice cream would make me feel better that's for sure! LOL! And, I started on http://www.ediets.com and so far I love it, except that I have to eat ALOT! You can choose which diet you want to go on through ediets, such as Jenny Craig, Oprah's diet, Atkins, etc. and it's much less per month than going to a Weight Watcher's meeting each week and getting weighed in like cattle. LOL! We'll see how it works for me. I am trying to lose 30 pounds but am looking at it realistically. I am taking it slowly since I have to learn to eat again and not starve my body. I love the sweet stuff too, but man, once you eat 5 meals per day, you won't crave the sweet stuff, trust me!
Hugs and love, Lisa
yet another good reason our kids will NOT drive till 18 at least!

COOL VINEGAR WITH A COTTON PUFF WILL TAKE THE STING OUT.
I keep aloe vera on hand for sunburns. Cools it off. Poor thing. Sunburns suck.
$2,400 per year isn't too bad. We pay Statefarm $432.00 per month for my hubby and me, a 19 y/o boy and 17 y/o girl. That's on 3 cars (a '03 blazer, a '95 ford f150 and a'91 ford ranger) with both kids getting the good grade discounts plus we get another discount for having our renters insurance (which is included in the monthly amount). Insurance sucks, but you have to have it! Good luck finding one. .:Barbara:.
Aww, I hope Wee one is feeling better! Sunburns and/or allergic reactions are no fun at all. Ice cream usually makes everything all better. The dinner you made sounded soooo good. I havent been able eat much lately with being so sick so I am starving!! As for diets, I hope you find one that works for you. everyone is different and god knows there are so many diets to choose from.
I do remember Dennis the menace on the sides of DQ treats.

Hi Sherri! Sorry to hear about Wee One's sunburn and wow -- good thinking on your part!! I didn't know that the oatmeal bath would help sunburns! What a great idea! My middle baby Aaron is so fair and he's always burning if he stays out in the sun too long. I have gobs of sunscreen that we forget to use because the pace of life gets too dang busy in this house. I hope to be very disciplined about it this summer!! Insurance is sooo expensive here in Florida for drivers! I am NOT looking forward to the teen years with our three kids... and that is awesome that you are saving on the homeowner's policy! Every bit counts these days! My mom can make pies like you do... but I on the other hand am just fair with my pie baking. One day maybe I will improve. The sauce for your ribs sounds divine!!!!!
I always use aloe vera gel on sunburn. I keep it in the fridge and it feels so lovely and cold and soothing when you apply it then. Your pies sound lush, wish I could have a bite :)......Jules xxx

I remember those terrible sunburns in the summer. I grew up in the country and on the tenn. river ouch come visit a proud mom
Oh, thank goodness you are so caring and nurturing. She needs that with those burns. . . Hopefully she recovers quickly, and really invest in the sunscreen!!!!!!! Cya, Kris
Poor weeone. Sunburns suck! I'm really not looking foreward to my insurance going up 2/3's when felicia starts driving. I still haven't went to the town hall for her birth certificate so she can get her permit. LOL She turned 17 yesterday and told me she and all her friends think that's just pathetic. LOL Well, I'm just happy because it kept her off the road a whole year. She's a little bit older and wiser now the way i look at it.
I wonder what ronnie uses in the pool. I think clorine but I think he uses the correct amount. Because I'm always saying, "Why don't I smell that fresh clorine scent in our yard but I do in others yards?" And he tells me that he doesn't over dose it so that our kids don't burn their eyes. He puts just what it needs. I'd rather smell it though.
Your daughter is sooooo sweet, I just love her. I hope she feels better soon...I've gotten many a burn and it isnt fun :)
<g> same for me lately with cooking dinner. I cook it, but I don't want to eat it. I'm trying to convince the hub that he needs to cook more so I won't wither away from starvation, but he's not buying it... hee hee...

Yes, please, lots of sunscreen. I always get so worried when I see or hear of a child getting a bad sunburn. Especially fair-skinned people. It is so important to be careful of overexposure to UV rays even before age 18. My children are bi-racial and naturally tanned, but I still insist on their using sunscreen even on cloudy days.
