This Sunday evening we are going to a dinner theatre for a company party. We will be seeing "Lost In Yonkers" and having dinner. I'm looking forward to it....however, the downside is that living in Florida, you get used to "casual dressing" which of course means.....everyone needs something to wear.
Wee one is easy, as she has lots of cute $10 sale dresses in her closet. I love that age where you can go to the store and pick out a dress, and they don't care what it looks like, what color it is, etc. Dh was relatively easy. We went to Belk, and I picked out some nice shirts so he has a selection and can feel like he actually dressed himself. Two down, two to go. I already have the pants I want to wear, I just need to get a top.....which of course I couldn't find anywhere in the entire freaking mall. I was looking for a black, wrap around top....which no one seems to carry. So, I suppose I will go with my "old faithful" white top. Three down....and now for Betsy *enter ominous music here.
Betsy is beautiful. Betsy has a knock out figure. Betsy covers her beautiful, knock-out figure in baggy t-shirts, jeans and black and white converse shoes. She wonders why at 15 she is still offered children's menus at restaurants....I should begin by saying she feels dressing in anything pink or yellow is "preppy" and she prefers the understated "black". She already has the pants which are kaki capris (omg, I can't believe she bought those to begin with!) and we are looking for a top. We go through racks of shirts, and as I hold up various styles and colors, all with a smile on my face saying, "What do you think of this one, honey?" she gives me a grimace "noooo", a frown "ewwww", or an eye roll "please". I keep telling myself to keep calm, be nice, she just wants to look good. It works until she grabs the nearest black top.....and I go off. "Fine, forget it. If you want to dress like crap, go ahead. Pick it out yourself and pay for it yourself....I'm done!" And I stomp off like a bratty kid. No one can push my buttons like she can, and I think she knows it.
I cool down by the time we get to the open area of the mall, and we go into a teen shop. I knew as we stepped inside that she wouldn't want anything in there....the entire store was pink and frilly and full of barely-there tops. We move on to the next and the first thing I show her.....she likes. *clutching chest.
We pick up two tops and she goes to try them on. As she is doing so, I look around the store. It's pretty depressing. Dance music is blaring through the speakers, young, neubile girls flitting about.....and there I stand with the realization that I couldn't fit into the biggest article of clothing they had! As I'm scanning the place, I notice two women who were definately in the WRONG store. One is a woman in her 60's, who is trying on a tube top. Hand to God, this is what she is wearing. The girls helping her decide which one to purchase were really being nice. I have to give them props....they didn't start laughing until the door was shut on her dressing room. She ultimately decided on both the beige top and the PINK SEQUINED one. Then of course there was the mother shopping with her teen daughter. Mom was sporting the "Dorothy Hammil" do, and teardrop glasses.....along with a belly shirt and hip huggers. What she didn't realize was that wearing a "belly shirt" means you have a toned belly to show off, not 4 inches of flab, and hip huggers are supposed to "hug" not "suffocate". But I digress....Betsy actually found a top, and it's gorgeous. Baby blue with a shoelace effect down the front, accented with little gems. I was so happy with her purchase, I got her a matching necklace. After we got home she tried on the entire outfit and she looks beautiful!
Of course now she needs shoes....

Oh NO! Not shoes!!! I never want to hear that word AGAIN, at least until the new school year is about to begin! I totally understand what you went through with your daughter though, because I go through the same thing everytime I have to shop with Bethany. I pick out tops that I think would look nice on her, and I get the "ewww" and eyeroll. Whatever happened to dressing our daughters in multi-fruit colored capris and matching pastel tops?! They still have those capris for women over 70, but STILL, I miss it! Now, the basic colors my daughter will wear are black, red and gray. How B-O-R-I-N-G! But, I was able to convince her to wear that blue top for her chorus concert. Take baby steps, that's all we can do. Sigh!
Hugs and love, Lisa
Oh Mom..how nice of you to dedicate an entry to me..even though it basically about how I have no "fashion sense" to you. Well Mom, if you went to my highschool, you'd want everyone I hang out with and then some to be on "What Not To Wear," I'm not joking. I do have to say, I love the outfit, and I believe maybe I'll get used to nicer looking things..I just need to feel more confident in the things I wear first. But thanks Mom for taking the time and looking with me, if you could handle all that, your an awesome mother..:o)
Glad you all found something to wear. The plus side to Betsy not dressing like the rest of the world is that she probably looks like she's wearing clothes most of the time, whereas all the other girls are nearly naked. I'm sure you see it in Florida all the time. It's the same way here. At my lovey's party, some of the outfits I saw had my jaw on the floor. Their skirts go up to their butts and their shirts are just barely covering whatever it is they have for bodies. I'm sure she'll change in a couple of years, but I know how you must want her to "girly" up every once in a while. Hope you have a great time on Sunday!
I wish I was going out. I hate buying clothes for myself I can never find anything I like. But at least you got everyone else taken care of.
Sounds like a fun shopping trip! I used to hate shopping with my mom--when I got to high school my grandmother and I shopped for my school clothes--those were the days! I have one of those wrap-around tops in baby blue checks--I love it! Good luck finding something, and take pictures! Love, Kim
aww love the comment your dd left you..."your an awesome mom" so sweet!
I'm glad that she found something she likes and that it looks good. I have seen some of the teens around here dress and there would be no way that my parents would have left me out of the house. Have fun at the dinner theatre!
awww, i miss shopping with my mom!! have a great time at the dinner! :o)
Shopping with teens, very fun. LOL My 12 y/o is starting to be interesting to shop with and we don't always agree on the clothes. If I buy it, I get the final approval though. If she really wants it and I don't like it, then she has to use her own money or earn it before buying the item. Usually she never goes back to get it.
We have quite a few of the hotsy totsy older women who dress like teens around here. Lots of belly piercings in women 40 plus and don't have the belly for it.
aweeee i just love your daughters comment....That says it all. You are a wonderful mommy who cares about her little girls. So much. And the fact that they know and realize that makes it all worth while. My daughter pushes my buttons too. But they just wanna look cool. You should see the looks felicia gives me when i hold up stuff..i get , "EWWW UM NO MOM OMG"
They should have a sign stating the age limit on the door."YOU MUST BE UNDER 25 TO PURCHASE CLOTHES HERE"I have the same problem with my 7 year old,I just can't wait till she's a teenager.Something to look forward too.NOT! Have a great time at the dinner,it sounds fun.Let us know how it goes.KIM
It was a fun day by the sounds of it and the comment she left on your journal. Good job mom! Hugs Lanny
