Weekend Update....

Can you guess what we did this weekend? Come on, take a guess....yup, we went to see Garfield the Movie. It was very cute....however, if it weren't for Bill Murray as Garfield, it would not have been very good. Some cartoons are just not meant to be turned into "real life" pictures. We went to the 12:20 show, which ended up being $21 for the four of us. Not bad....however....the snacks which included three drinks (two small, one med.), three small popcorns and a small order of nachos.....came to a whopping $29! Absolutley ridiculous. And here's another nugget of info that blew my mind....you could pay at the snack bar with a credit card. When did this happen? Is this a new thing or have I just been living under a rock somewhere? A credit card for popcorn? Sheesh!

After the movie we went and visited with my parents for a bit. They were enjoying a leisurely day in front of the tv....which is all my dad can do now. He is slowly becoming housebound, and with the deterioration in movement and eyesight, tv is about all he does when he isn't sleeping. Poor mom has become housebound along with dad. She can't leave him, for fear he will try to get up and walk, and end up falling. This disease has a high fatality rate from falls. It also is marked with severe exhaustion, which makes for a very long evening for mom, when dad turns in at 6:00. I signed her up for a free trial of People PC, since her service provider is so bad lately. She did send me a "test" e-mail, so I think she is getting the hang of it!  Way to go mom!

Yesterday the girls and I stayed home and cleaned while dh worked. When he got home Betsy took off for her Saturday night out at the movies with friends, and wee one, dh and I headed out for Borders. We browsed a bit, and bought a few things. Wee one bought The Waterboy dvd, (she and Betsy love Adam Sandler), and I bought the season 2 dvd of Strangers With Candy....omg....too hilarious. I loved that show. I have watched all the episodes since I bought it. I also got two workbooks for wee one, so she can keep learning over the summer. You would think she would have balked at that, but she has been working in them since last night....

I'm not sure if we have any plans for this week. I know on Wednesday I'm watching my dad for a bit, while my mom takes her girlfriend to the doctors (they only have one car and dh couldn't get the day off), and then they are going to stop at a home decorating store. I'm so glad mom has a new friend. Maybe I'll make rice krispy treats and kool aid for after their outing! LOL....she would love that. Other than that, I don't think we have any pressing engagements. The girls are bugging me to start painting their rooms, so I need to start thinking about that. I just haven't been in the painting mood lately. I suppose a trip to Lowe's is in the near future.....

We go to the movies ALL the time and have a limited budget and I have it down pat how to get through it the cheapest way.  You buy the large popcorn, but you ask for 2 or 3 smaller bags (however many extra children you have with you), then you divide up the popcorn that way.  Most places have free refills on the $6.99 large popcorn, so it works out perfectly.  I also go to CVS prior to the movie and stock up on the sodas for everyone, so instead of costing $4.00 for a soda, they are only $1.00 per.  I have a HUGE backpack purse, courtesy of Kim (Edgebag) and I stuff the sodas in there.  They NEVER look, trust me!  I am glad I didn't waste my money on this Garfield movie though, I didn't really want to see it anyway and since Emma only finds the one part where Garfield says "Stupid Dog" funny, I figured it wasn't worth it.

Sorry to hear about your dad and your mom not being able to leave the house.  My grandmother is that way also as my grandfather is in the beginning stages of Alzheimer's and any time she left the house, he would call 911 and say she was missing.  So, she is in the same boat as your mom, not being able to leave.  But at least you are going over on Wednesday to give her a little break.  You are a wonderful daughter!!  :)

I have to admit I have NEVER heard of "Strangers with Candy" but can only presume since you like everything British, it must be one of those British shows correct?  I am glad you did buy something for yourself and are enjoying it at least!!!
Hugs and love, Lisa

I think it's ridiculously expensive to go to the movies these days.  But what's amazing to me is how many families seem to go ALL the time.  I usually wait until the movie comes out in dvd and buy it if I want it, or rent it at blockbuster.  Hope your Dad is doing ok.  You're sweet to help your Mom out--she probably really appreciates getting out of the house and getting her mind off of the situation for a while.  Have a great week.

wow...movies are expensive in your area!! I though bloeing $25 when we went was rediculous!!..glad to hear the movie was good though since we may be going to see it soon too!!

It is so wonderful to hear you have set your mom up with People PC...it will be her way of communicating and venturing since she is at the house with your dad so much...and you going over to let her get out is awesome!! GO GIRL...that's an excellent daughter!!

Movies are just as expensive in the US as UK then :( We have been able to pay for things by credit cards for a while, but I still prefer cash, so I know what I have spent and what I have got left, lol
Sorry to hear about your dad. I know it's hard for all the family when situations like that happen. My grandfather is housbound and my grandmother looks after him along with carers. It hard work for her though and awful to see somebody who fought in wars become less independant. I think families are strong and help out lots in these situations though. The internet was a brill idea though, well done.
Good luck with the painting :)

My family and I hardly ever go to the movies UNLESS we go to the earlier shows which, of course, are less expensive. I think the cut-off hour for the reduced rate is 6 or 7:00 pm. Oh well...anyway, we also tried to check out Garfield this weekend but it wasn't playing at our local theater yet, so we checked out the new Harry Potter movie instead. We're not huge Potter fans but it was okay...
And yes, our refreshments cost more than the price of admittance! Pure craziness!

I hate the movies just for the freakin' cost of the snacks. It's highway robbery. I have painting i need to do too.....let me know when you start maybe it will inspire me to get moving.

I hope your mom enjoys her day out!  It's very sweet of you to give her that time! Oh yeah, you mentioned her isp is bad, well if you have broadband, you can make her a screen name under your account and she can access it as a guest from her house...with broadband, you both can be online at the same time (she can be on dial-up if you have broadband).   Angie

I have to agree with ya on the Garfield movie. It was average at best but I did love garfield..what a hoot and Bill Murray was great! We love movies but I'm with you..when did the prices and all get so ridiculous? Geesh.
I am glad your mom gets a day out with a friend, its very nice of you to watch your dad. I have been reading her journal and she sounds like a pretty special lady. And such a great writer, I see where you get your talent from.

I've hard that the Garfield movie wasn't all that great. When we go to the movies, not often, we go to the matinees.
I'm glad your mom will get alittle outing, she'll need that from time to time. Prayers for you mom and your dad.
50 First Dates with Adam Sandler is really good.

I thought I was the only person on the Earth who loved the humor in Strangers With Candy.  A 40 something ex-addict, recovering prostitute (LOL) in high school...how ingenius is that? A sneaky lil trick I picked up growing up in a family of 6 kids...LARGE purse, stashed bulk candy/goodies from the grocery store, then you just need to buy drinks.

You've been busy!  I'm wanting to see the "Garfield" movie--he's such a cool cat (we can't forget Puss In Boots, either!).  In high school all of my school folders had either Garfield or Odie on them--too cute!  I've never heard of "Borders" before--what kind of store is that?  Love, Kim :o)
