Last night I was going to make my famous beef sandwiches. They are very simple....put your roast in a crock pot, add a jar of sliced pepperonicci, and let it simmer all day. Serve on a bun with mozzarella cheese. I love the way your lips burn a bit after a few bites....however....since hubby dear called and said that he was having "stomach issues", I decided the flaming sandwiches would not be a good idea and instead, decided to make a milder, yet comforting meal of hot turkey sandwiches....complete with homemade mashed potatoes, seasoned green beans and cranberry sauce. I bought sliced roasted turkey from the deli (none of that fake, who-knows-what-parts-are-in-here packaged meat for my family, no siree) and fresh potato bread, which everyone here loves.
Within no time I had whipped up my "yukon gold" potatoes into mouth watering mounds of culinary ecstasy (okay, maybe that was a bit over the top....they were really good, how's that?), and toasted the bread just so....I plated my masterpiece and presented them to my children who, only moments before, had whined about how hungry they were and just when was dinner to be ready?
As I was turning from the oven I looked over and saw Betsy with a strange look on her face, holding her gravy soaked sandwich, obviously trying to figure out what to do with it. I said, "Betsy, what are you doing?" to which she replied in an annoyed tone, "I'm trying to eat this thing but you covered it with gravy and mashed potatoes....what a mess!" I took one look at John and we both started cracking up. I couldn't help it! There sat my 17 year old, academically gifted child with a blue plate special sandwich in her hand and no idea how to eat it! Through my laughter and consequent tears I said, "Betsy, you eat it with a knife and fork....it's not a sandwich you pick up". She looks at me like I'm nuts which of course sends her father over the top, as he is now choking on said sandwich. It was priceless. I then explained the concept of the "hot turkey sandwich", and she then got it. She said, "Mom, you KNOW I hate when my food touches. Why would you think I would eat this?" Finally she started laughing along with us, and conceded to being the subject of our teasing all evening.
I don't know why we found this so funny. I guess it was because she looked so innocent when she was trying to figure out what she was supposed to do with her dinner. She reminded me of when she was little....I don't get many moments like that with her any more. She is such a smart girl that when something like this happens, it tickles me. Wee one on the other hand knew just what to do, and didn't miss a beat with her knife and fork as she watched her sister. She said that the dinner was "awesome"....and I have to say it was. The cranberry sauce was really good too. Even though it wasn't homemade, I mixed a can of the whole berry stuff with a container of cranberry-raspberry sauce. Delicious! I'm a cranberry fanatic. I need to get some cherry pie filling to make a cran/cherry pie with the leftovers....good stuff!
Yesterday I was washing London's bedding and guess what I found? The missing tooth! I don't actually think that it was the one that John dropped (lol), but one that came out while she was chewing a bone in her crate. I saved it, along side the tooth wee one had pulled on Wednesday. I remember saving one of Percy's baby teeth, however, it was lost a long time ago.
I did my grocery shopping yesterday and actually went to three stores to get the best deals. I haven't done that in ages. I started at WalMart for the snacks and cereal, went on to Publix for tea and dairy, then moved on to Winn Dixie for the rest. I did get a lot for the money, and I planned it so that I didn't have to drive all around. It was a straight shot down the road. Gas prices are creeping their way back up so I'm back to watching how far I go+9-*. 88888888888 <----London's contribution to my entry....she just stood up here to check out my breakfast. She was disappointed however when she saw it was cheddar cheese rice cakes and orange juice....
Okay, I've sat here long enough and it's time to get going. I have lots of sitting, I mean sewing to do today!
****The picture at the top is not of our dinner....just one I found on the web. I'm thinking Betsy would not have tried to pick that up! LOL

do you mash your potatos by hand with the thingy or do you use the blender? I'm just curious how they made that icecream shaped scoop. I blend mine and they are mushy.
The story you told about your daughter really put a smile on my face today. I should try serving that to my 11 year old daughter and see what happens. I love my crock pot and I think I am going to try your recipe with the beef. It sounds wonderful. Have a great week.
Hot turkey sandwiches, one of my favorites, Hugs Lanny
HA! Glad you put in the caveat! I really thought you made that! Sure sounds good regardless, Can I come over??? I'll even do the dishes afterward! Cya, Kris
I hadn't made hot open sandwiches in years, it's just slipped my mind I guess but now you have put me in the mood for one in a big way!!
the sandwich sounds yummy but I would have done the same as Betsy and tried to pick it up to eat. I just thing of sandwich as finger food. Felix is losing his baby teeth the same as London :).................Jules xxxxxxx

You've made my mouth water!! Andrew did just about the same thing when I made open face sandwiches for them. He had no idea and he was not amused!! I can remember when I first started working going to the bus station on Main Street in my hometown and getting a hot turkey sandwich for lunch! They had the best diner food ever!
Lori
Yum - I want to come for dinner. Oh, and btw, I don't like my food to touch either!! Rhonda
What a great Betsy story! You'll be laughing about it for years!!
I love hot turkey sandwhiches. A lot of the "down home" restaurants here serve them!
Gillie
You better be eating rice cakes after a meal like that one!! But, I have to admit that the open faced turkey sandwich is my ultimate favorite meal in the world!!! But, I like french fries with it covered with the same gravy! YUMMY!!! Now I want some, but give me the canned cranberry sauce WITHOUT those gross actual whole cranberries in them. I like the lines from the can. LOL!
Hugs and love,
Lisa
